Our Story

How It All Started

Our Founder, Jimmy Dominguez, was a leader, a pioneer and visionary. He was a track star at San Jose High School and ran the low hurdles and the 2nd leg in the 880 relay. His relay team called him “Mustaseed” for Mustard seed. The back story to this name was that in the early days of California, the explorers would drop mustard seeds along their route to ensure they could find their way back years later. The mustard seed was a symbol of growth and renewal since you could always count on the mustard plants to “show you the way”.

He moved to Maui in 1973, worked as a painter and started JD Painting in 1988. Jimmy wanted to change the negative image and perception people had of painters. He envisioned the painting industry to have higher standards of quality and professionalism where everyone at JD Painting would put their heart in their job and be proud of what they produced.

Jimmy wanted them to take pride in what they did, even in their appearance, looking neat and clean while providing Clients with quality and service. Back then, one didn’t see the two words, “Quality” and “Service” being used together as much as you do today. This vision was how he crossed over into the hospitality market, which relies heavily on providing excellent service and the highest quality of workmanship.

Jimmy also made sure we didn’t knock on people’s doors only when we needed work. JD Painting has always been proactive and relational, always there when there was a need for us. He taught us the importance of relationships & trust. These values allowed JD Painting to expand the operation to three islands, all of which are still in operation today. Jimmy set the foundation and “showed us the way” and that foundation along with the values he set, are still alive today as we graciously continue to build his legacy.
